Find the support you need for a healthier mind and body.
Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect. You may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or stress, struggling with sadness or loss, navigating relationship challenges, or adjusting to a life transition. Perhaps you've been managing a lot for a long time and are ready to make more space for yourself.
Whatever brings you to therapy, you don't have to have everything figured out before you begin.
I offer compassionate, individualized psychotherapy for adults who want to better understand themselves, work through difficult experiences, and develop healthier ways of navigating life's challenges. Together, we'll explore what's happening in your life, recognize the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and identify practical ways to support your emotional well-being.
My goal is to provide a supportive, collaborative space where you feel comfortable being yourself, asking questions, and working toward changes that feel meaningful to you.
You deserve support, too.

Dedicated to guiding you towards personal growth and healing.
Welcome!
I am so happy you are here! I'm Anne, a licensed clinical social worker serving adults in Virginia and DC. With over 25 years of experience, I offer a supportive, grounded therapeutic space where clients can navigate stress, grief, life transitions, and emotional overwhelm. My approach is warm, relational, and clinically informed—centered on helping you feel understood, strengthened, and empowered.
I’m a native Alexandrian and earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I began my career shortly after 9/11, working with youth and families facing crisis and uncertainty. I later spent two decades in pediatric oncology, supporting patients, caregivers, and medical teams through the profound challenges that accompany childhood cancer. These experiences shaped my deep appreciation for resilience, the power of presence, and the importance of strong support systems.
Today, through Anne Carlson Schirmer, LLC, I provide telehealth therapy for adults seeking compassionate, clinically grounded care. My goal is to meet you where you are, help you navigate what feels heavy, and support you in creating meaningful, sustainable change.
